How to Buy the Right Microwave Oven For your Kitchen and Family

If you are someone who loves watching cooking shows, and are enthusiastic about trying out new recipes that your favorite Chef prepares on TV, you know that electric or gas stoves aren’t just fine. Many recipes require a microwave oven in order to prepare the dish to perfection. This doesn’t mean that you go to the store, and buy the same high-end microwave oven that your favorite chef-host uses in the show.

Please be informed that he works on a set. Personal kitchens and appliances often have the space and cost constraints associated with them. Besides, any model of microwave oven has an average life of 10 years. That means, you are not going to buy a new oven every other year. So before you finalise any model of microwave oven, consider the following points -

1.     Size - Analyse the available space on your kitchen counter. If there isn’t enough space for the size and type of microwave that you are looking to buy, then you might want to consider buying a model that can be mounted on the wall. Go for a bigger oven for a bigger family; you don’t want to cook the same dish twice a day, one after the other, in order to meet the quantity required by your family.

2.     List down the must-have features - Auto defrost, pre-programmed auto-cook menus, user-friendly controls, as well as time- and temperature-control sensors are a few features to look for while buying a new microwave oven. If technology has enabled eliminating the guesswork out of cooking, then why shouldn’t you avail it? Such features allow you to concentrate on other chores such as setting up the table, placing the necessary cutlery, and chopping salad while a dish is being cooked in the microwave oven.

3.     Power-rating - There are ovens with power-ratings ranging from 600 W to 1500 W and above. It is an obvious fact that appliances with higher power ratings will be more efficient and quick in cooking food.

4.     Child-lock - Many models feature keyless locks. You have to enter an input sequence of numbers to unlock your microwave appliance. This feature comes in handy if you have a little one at home.

5.     Modes of Operation - Microwave ovens are designed to provide three types of cooking - micro cooking, grill cooking, and convection cooking. If you love baking breads, cakes, and cookies, apart from cooking the main course dishes, it makes sense to buy an appliance that has all the three modes of operation. Some appliances also offer combination modes such as micro and convection, or convection and grill. These further make baking fluffy cakes easy for you.

6.     After-sales Service - Although all home appliance brands have technologically-advanced, and aesthetically appealing microwave ovens in their range of products, what differentiates them from each other is the after-sales service offered by the brand. You are very likely to face a situation after a few years when a part needs to be serviced or replaced. If the brand doesn’t provide you with a prompt service for replacement of that non-functioning part, your appliance will just be a showpiece in your kitchen. So, it is always better to study the service network of the brand before you buy its appliance.
