Front loading washing machines – Clean your clothes with a spin

Owning a washing machine has become a necessity in life. Or else, how would you get through the load of laundry in the weekend and go out for shopping? If you have a washing machine, you just have to dump the clothes in for washing and tend to other chores and can finish all the work together and quickly. To help you with better ways to wash clothes, the design of the washing machine has been altered many times. The new modifications incorporated factors like water and power consumption, cleaning efficiency and convenience. Front-loading washing machines are one type which is highly praised for its cleaning power and less water consumption.

What is a front-loading washing machine?

In a front-loader, the drum is set horizontally in the machine with the door or lid at the front side of the machine. The drum will rotate to move the clothes around to clean them.

Efficiency

A top loading washing machine which has the lid on the top of the machine requires enough water to cover the clothes in the tub. But, a front-loader only needs a third of this quantity as the drum is placed horizontally and it just sprays the water on the clothes as it turns. This saves a lot of water and energy required to move the load of clothes. Also, front-loading washing machines can accommodate more number of clothes when compared to top-loaders, because it does not have an agitator in the middle.

Detergents

High foaming detergents are not suitable for front-loaders because it uses less quantity of water and so, the lather will not be washed off from the clothes completely. This can result in suds formation or residues in the clothes, which can cause skin irritation as well as make the clothes appear dull. High-efficiency detergents with low-sudsing formula are recommended for this kind of washing machines.

Clothing life

Front-loaders push the clothes around with its spinning action and uses gravity to drop the clothes into the water on the bottom of the horizontally-sitting drum. This means, less friction on the clothes compared to top-loaders which uses agitators or central spindle to push the clothes around. Wear and tear of clothes will be less when using a front-loader and it extends the life of your favourite garments and linens.

The front-loader also has some limitations which you should consider while deciding whether it is ideal for your home. You will have to bend or kneel in front of the machine to load or take out the clothes, as the door to the drum is at the front of the machine. Once the wash cycle has started, you can’t open the door to add some more laundry like in the top-loaders in which you can just take off the lid and toss in the extra clothes.
