Before you invest in a level, you need to have a basic understanding as to what a level is. In layman terms, this is tool that is used to establish a horizontal plane. A typical level consists of a small glass tube filled with liquid and an air bubble. This small tube is sealed and fixed horizontally in a metallic block with smooth surface. To see if a surface is on a level, the bubble has to be in the middle of the glass tube.

The carpenter’s level gets its name because this tool is commonly found in toolkits of carpenters. This tool is also called a mason’s tool and is usually made of plastic, aluminium or wood. A typical carpenter’s level contains around three to four vials. The bubbles in these vials serve as your level indicators.

A line level is usually used by builders and skilled do-it-yourselfers. It is usually small in size and it contains only one vial or the entire level is made up of one big vial. This tool has plastic hooks at the ends that can be used to hang the level. The level is hung from a string that is tied between two different points to ensure that the points are of equal height.

A torpedo level is very similar to the carpenter’s level, except that it is smaller than the carpenter’s one. Ideal for small spaces, this tool is a favourite among hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers.
